Recensione : Six Pieces Of Silver (Audio CD) Six Pieces of Silver, del 1956, è certamente uno di quei dischi da avere e da ascoltare, per chi vuole capire l'essenza del jazz moderno. Un disco tra quelli posti in un anno-cerniera tra il tramonto del be-bop più ortodosso, la via cool del jazz californiano che dal bop aveva preso il via, realizzando una sintesi tra la coolness in voga nei primi '50 anche sulla costa orientale (Miles Davis dalla Tuba Band fino al quintetto con Silver e poi con Garland) e il risorgente interesse per i suoni più riferiti alla tradizione nera, col blues e il gospel secolarizzato in evidenza. Pur essendo in sostanza una edizione dei Jazz Messengers della formazione dell'anno prima (vedi "[[ASIN:"B0007M23AQ Horace Silver and The Jazz Messengers"]]"), ma senza Art Blakey, il suono si differenzia ed è più rilassato e cool, più arrangiato e definitivamente guidato dalle idee compositive di Horace Silver, che però giustamente lascia spazio alla espressività dei solisti, in una via che lo stesso Art Blakey seguirà, per esempio quando Benny Golson verrà chiamato a dirigere i rinnovati Messengers. I pezzi sono sempre validi, e molto piacevoli all'ascolto, con Señor Blues e Cool Eyes a fornire due pagine memorabili e a divenire presto standard suonati dalla comunità dei jazzmen. I collaboratori sono di primo piano, con Hank Mobley che inserisce il suo suono corposo ma agile nella tessitura del leader, Donald Byrd che amplia la tavolozza colorandola di blue notes e di linee melodiche sempre logiche ma mai banali, il solidissimo Doug Watkins al basso e Louis Hayes che alla batteria è meno protagonista di Art Blakey, ma non lo fa rimpiangere. Le bonus tracks, incise due anni dopo, meritano davvero, con Junior Cook al tenore e Gene Taylor al basso e soprattutto con la vigorosa versione vocale di Bill Henderson, decisamente soul, che nel suo stile precorre le successive incursioni jazz di cantanti di estrazione più tipicamente soul come Lou Rawls. E poi, il prezzo, quasi troppo basso. E a questo punto scaricare o copiare è solo perdita di tempo, di qualità e di senso, oltre che di autenticità e delle informazioni contenute nelle oneste liner notes. Musica che vi saprà interessare e appassionare ad ogni ascolto, e che merita che si spenda almeno l'equivalente di un pacchetto di nocive sigarette, nemmeno delle più care. BUY!
